Hi Tabitha, I found the comment just above yours about the Cades Cove area intriguing as well. I appreciate you taking the time to read and comment on this apple Stack Cake.
I am sure your Nanny made a wonderful cake. We love the Appalachians and are as much a part of them as they are us.

Thank you so much!! My grandmother we called Nanny made this cake when I was a kid. I have found memories of it. Thank you for giving it a name and a story. The more I read about Appalachian customs and methods, I do believe the paternal side of my family has strong Appalachian roots.

Thank you for that tidbit of information! I found it very interesting on the Apple Stack Cake. I did not know the history behind it.

I am sure it originated before the Cades Cove folks used it! I wonder just how far back this tradition goes?

My MAMA used to make these but I did not know back then that they were called STACK CAKES,,,THEN we went to the SMOKIES where I purchased a book on the things were done there in the COVE at weddings…Each guest at the wedding would bring cake to stack and those couples who had the tallest cake were considered VERY WELL THOUGHT OF..ALL I KNOW IS THAT MY MAMA’S CAKES WERE ALWAYS DELICIOUS!!!
