The idea was that no matter the outcome at least part of the family would have fought with the winning side and could therefore to some degree protect any remaining family members and perhaps save the property as well.

The research made me aware of the horror of this great conflagration that beset this nation, especially in the Southern states where destruction was on such a vast scale. I remember reading that while the war was almost entirely fought in the South, there were over 1,000 galas and balls held in New York city during one year alone. The scale of the fighting and the cost to human life was enormous. Though the dead were nearly evenly divided between North and South, it needs to be kept in mind that the franchised population of the South was only one third that of the North. Moreover, the North hired mercenaries from Europe to fight and, lastly, individuals could purchase an exemption from the draft. The loss in manpower, therefore, was many times greater for the postwar South than for the North. From this great national upheaval and bloodletting, fortunately slavery ended and the Union was preserved.

Old fashion battle formations and frontal assaults had not caught up to advancements in weaponry and thus men were slaughtered at horrible rates. Muskets were replaced by rifled guns and cannons which could kill at greater range than before. 620,000 men lost their life’s and who knows how many died of desease (civilian and wounded). Yet the War was the pivotal point for that generation and times softens the horror.
