The one about “what does the water do”? This recipe came from my blog and I posted it on Facebook and several people have posted it on their blog. This is my MIL’s recipe from the 1940’s. She added water to have a gravy at the end of cooking it. It makes the meatloaf moist. She removes the meatloaf and makes a tomato gravy from the juices. Here is my link so you know where the recipe came from. https://www.cookingwithk.net/2012/04/classic-old-fashioned-meatloaf-cooked.html

I am wondering the same thing about the water. What does the water do? Looks delicious and I am going to try.

Am I reading it right that I pour 2cups of water in the cast iron fry pan surrounding the meat? It sure looks delicious.

Hi Dean, I agree, Lard or shortening is much better in Cast Iron.

Hello Terri, Yes, you bake this uncovered. I am sure the pan greased down would work just as well. Thank you for asking.

Also, not a fan of sprays so do you think greasing skillet with oil would be okay? Thanx!
