Not necessarily, as long as the water is moving and the rust moving, I would assume the charger has an issue with the needle or something. As long as it works, i would go ahead and clean the skillet. Thanks for asking.

My smallish charger shows no movement on the gauge. The rust is moving, and the charger is running.

The plastic pan I have to use is kind of tight, and the lid is close to my anode (old fwd axle shaft) . I put a piece of ceramic tile between the lid and anode as a safety measure.

Hi Mark,

You can use any kind of clamp to clamp the wire to the pan. As long as the wire is touching the pad it will work.

But what if the cast iron doesn’t have an eyelet. Corn muffin pan, lid, Many others. How do I lower the skillet into the solution without a hole in the cast iron. Mark

Thanks Nick. I really liked using it. Took a lot of the hard work out of it. Our cast iron came out great. I will be cleaning more iron using the electrolysis method in the future. This will no doubt become my only way of cleaning in the future.

Hi Neil, you can submerge the negative lead under the water. I had mine under water a couple of times. The main thing is not to let the two pieces of iron touch.

If your piece of cast iron is really caked you may have to turn the piece around so the back in facing the sacrificial iron after the first hour of so. This allows both sides to get the full impact according to the folks I follow.

Let me know how it turns out!

Thank you for following us!

Love the electrolysis idea and would like to try it. In hooking the charger clamp to the cast iron item, is it OK to put it slightly under the water or do you need to leave that little bit of item above water. In your photo it looks like it is all immersed.
Thanks for the great idea.
Nell
