We walked either overland to get to the school. bus or several miles of dirt roads. My Mom worked at a 5 and dime store as Dad was unable to work but he raised a huge garden which Mom would can for winter. My Dad had lung issues as a result of his days of living in West Virginia working in the coal mines. He was a lot older than Mom but they truly loved each other. I love them and respect all they did to raise my two sisters, one brother and I.

Yes, our grandparents were truly the backbone of this country! They had morals and ethics set in stone! A handshake to them meant more than signed contracts today. Thank you for your comment!

~Blessings~

Always remember (and I am getting misty-eyed as I write this) that your grandparents, and others like them, were the true backbone of this country and what made our country great. Quiet people who went about their business, doing what they needed to do, day in and day out, never complaining, and raising their families as best they could. When I think of what it means to be American, or of the “American fightin’ spirit”, I think of people like your grandparents. God Bless–

My grandma raised 12 kids also and time were rough. I have been fortunate enough to have inherited the copper kettle and grain cradle. My mother, along with brothers and sisters shoveled a mile long road just to get to the school bus. They were tougher yet when my grandfather was killed and grandma was left to raise the kids on her own and she never remarried. But looking at her life, I learned alot and cherish the memories.
