Hi Kathy, The Orpingtons are wonderful birds. If you ever need any eggs to hatch look up our friends over at “Lots ‘A’ Cluckin’ Farm” on Facebook! They are breeders and have beautiful birds!

Thanks.

This time I went with the Black Australorps for this flock and I have enjoyed them immensely!
They are friendly, weather resistant and eggcellent layers!

Hi Betta, A reader, Deb loves them in SW MO. The writer of the article raises them and loves them also. They are truly wonderful birds. 🙂

I have had Buff Orpingtons in S.W. MO before and they were excellent birds for us. They did very well in the winter, as well as the summer. They were the BEST mammas and they were very well behaved. We let them free range in our yard, and they didn’t seem to want to wander too far. They thrived in our area, so you should be just fine.

My dream in the near future is to have a few chickens for enjoyment and eggs enough for me and my husband. Trying to do as much research now as I can. But looks like the Orpingtons are a wonderful beginner’s choice.

I just got 4 lovely girls who are only 15 weeks old. They will be a bit before they start to lay, but everything I have read led me to believe these would be my best choice for just enough eggs to keep husband and I supplied. I really didn’t want to deal with an ill-tempered bird and all the Buffs have a nice reputation for personality. We are in the Missouri Ozarks and most of our weather is not extreme, so they should thrive here. I also am happy to read that they will not be likely to “soar like eagles”, like some do. I can put chicken wire over the top of an area if I have to, but it would save me some work if it isn’t necessary. They have a lovely little house with a roost for nighttime, where I can close a solid door to keep them safe. Looking forward to this!

They are the only chickens that can survive the crazy cold we get here (-50 anyone???) and still churn out eggs. They’re also the most sociable ladies we’ve ever had. When we open their coop which is at chest level and over their run, they spread out their wings to give us hugs!

I had Buff Orpington’s in Slaton, Texas, or West Texas, our temps are often well over the 100’s in the summer, they did very well both summer and winter. I used an old stucco’d well house, for the chicken coop, that way they were well protected from coyotes, during the night, during the day they were let loose to free range feed, plus they got their regular feed, I did have plenty of shade trees, and lived on 3 acres! I had two dogs that would help me herd them to the chicken coop in the evenings, and I always did a head count. We had a few other breeds of chickens with them, mainly white leghorns, they did well together!

Orpingtons also do ok in heat, as long as they have cool shade like under trees and plenty of cold water. It gets hot in TN too not as hot as AZ but it does get up to 95-100 in july and august.
