I just made this recipe. I read it 3 times before I followed the instructions step by step. My filling overflowed a gross amount and smoked up the house. It was almost as if the filling was double what should have been. Advice?

Is the butter cut into slices and put on top, or is it melted and poured on? The list of ingredients differs from the directions.
