Hi Karen, I would use it more as a teat and not a main food source. A little bit along should not hurt.

If you let it get crusty (a little hard) it will be easier to feed them.

Thanks.

Hi Mark, The rule of thumb here is:

4 square feet of floor space per Large Fowl chicken. You have 7 chickens. You need around 30 Square feet, you have 96.. Plenty of room there to add more chickens on if need be.

10 Sq Ft of ground space per Large Fowl chicken (Yours is considered large fowl) You need 70 Square feet. You have 72. Perfect. Nothing wrong with adding on more space if you choose. A larger area is just a choice preference.

Laying pellets sure help out with the eggs.

If you have room in your yard to use a Chicken Tractor let me know and I can get you a link for one.

Thanks for asking.

We have been picking enough eggs for the 2 of us plus 3 neighbors for the past eight months.
The hens are in an eight by 12 ft. pen with a 6 by 12 ft. coop on the end for sleeping. Would it be better to have a bigger fenced in yard attached to the pen for them to eat grass and bugs? Been feeding the chicks laying pellets since they are old enough to lay.
Any advice?
