Hi Diane, we are partial to county eggs also. We eat them all the time, as long as the hens are lying.

We also love chickens and yes, they are fun to watch! Thanks for the moment!

They taste much different, the color of the yolk is much more of a dark yellowish/orange. So much taste and a bit more watery but that’s normal. I don’t consider them much more than the store variety. If anything, most of the time they’re cheaper or at least the same price. I get mine from a variety of people around where I live, which is in the country and I pay anywhere from $2.50 – 3.50 per dozen. But nothing compares to the taste. I also love seeing the chickens run around and they have a much better quality of life, the poor little things. I just love chickens 🙂 they’re so cute lol

Don’t be fooled by big egg companies who say farm fresh or free range. Most of those poor chickens get a few extra square feet in their cage. Certifed organic eggs have to be in a controlled enviromnent so chickens don’t have access to non organic bugs, grass, etc. So support your local egg farmer for the best.

Hi CLittle, I posted your question on my Facebook pages and this is some of hte answers that my readers posted.

Danielle Nardozzi My hens only start to attack my rooster when he becomes too aggressive. Maybe they think he is too heavy on them and felt like he was trying to hurt them?

Talton Wood SOUNDS LIKE THEY ARE NEEDING A NUTRIENT THAT THEY ARE GETTING FROM HIS FEATHERS,MIGHT GIVE THEM SOME OYSTER SHELLS,,,HE COULD BE HEN PECKED…

Shawn Meeser Pecking order maybe ?? Didnt they pic on him BEFORE he was injured ? we always put the new flock penned next to the older one for about a nonth so they get use to seeing each other

Ayslen Redmon Was this rooster raised with the hens that are picking on him or is he a new member of the flock? (This lady is a breeder and knows a lot about them)

Janet Barlow Is there any way to make a separate pen for him where it’s warm, at least until he is strong enough to defend himself? Otherwise they will pick him to death, especially if he’s bleeding. The “blue stuff” may have thrown them off the scent, so to speak, but when it wears off I’m afraid they’ll go back after him again. (I truly hope they don’t.) Good luck….

Cheryl Hite Brustin From an chicken farm person…whatever the reason they started on him…separate him…they will not stop now..save his life. Another poster was right..they are cannibalistic

Feel free to contact me regarding any of these answers or suggestions.

He was all bloody on one side of his neck the first time I put them all in their warmer room in the barn the other day. So, I separated him from the hens for a while, but realized it was so cold (well below zero) that night that he would have frozen; so I put him back in at dark. The next day, I sprayed some blue stuff on his wound on his neck. This is stuff we had gotten from the farm store a few years ago for chicks who were being picked on. So far, it has been much better. The hens don’t seem to respect him, and he is quite overweight. Also, he doesn’t crow much lately–but it has been overly cold here in the past few days…so don’t really blame him.

I have had chickens for many years , they live in a clean shed (daily cleaning takes just a few minutes) ,have good food ,lots of extra’s like hot mashes in winter and spring all leftovers except chicken or onion. They get mixed grains, wheat and a few pellets (not many because they don’t really like them) I give them garlic once a week, they are free to roam ,get silverbeet or kale ,are allowed to help me weed when I am digging . I know it’s only 6 chickens but I get an abundance of eggs and regularly give them away to friends and the comments are usually ” I don’t know what you feed your chickens but the eggs are delicious and bright orange yolks” … When I go to Melbourne I take 2 dozen with me and my daughters love them. So no matter what the “Experts” tell me I KNOW farm eggs are much more full of flavour. Sorry didn’t meant a write a book ,but you get my drift! Living the good life in Tasmania and growing vegies too!

Having grown up on the farm and raising hens I was happy to get some chickens. We have 7 hens and 3 Mallard hens. We really like the flavor of both the hen and duck eggs. We can’t really tell them apart. We provide eggs to our family, we have 2 grown children. And we enjoy providing fresh free range eggs to friends that are interested in free range eggs.

Farm Fresh are the best, and we get the brown ones all the time. We get them from a friend whose neighbor sells them and his price is about the same, maybe a few cents lower than store bought, but they are much larger (except in the spring when the new hens are laying, cute little eggs!), tastier and just all around better! We love them!

I feed an army of 6 nightly (only 3 of them actually family). My 8 girls keeps us well into eggs all week long, and on the weekends we eat roughly 1-1/2 dozen eggs for breakfast. I no longer buy eggs at the store, and I have noticed the shells are much thicker. My girls I do not buy any feed for. They free range for their food, and eat whatever my rabbits kick out of their cages. They crack me up to, since they free range, sometimes its an easter egg hunt on the farm to make sure there’s no hidden nests as we dont want to raise chicks, but if it happens, it happens. Most of the girls lay in the nest boxes, but every so often, we find random eggs in various locations. Good thing we know how to float test em!

I love going out & collecting the eggs & while I’m there I talk to the “ladies” & they talk back(we have our own dialect). Not only are the birds beautiful but entertaining, esp. when let out in the yard. The ladies really like when we have veggie leftovers like tomatoes, grapes, apples etc. Well enough about the ladies, they lay brown eggs. The eggs are so superior to store bought there is just no comparison. Mild flavor, beautiful darker yellow yolk. We will never go back to store bought!!

And not only are the farm fresh eggs healthier, they have so much more flavor, thus, I seldom even have to salt them, which is better on my sodium!!

I agree it is much easier to fry a farm fresh egg than a store bought one. I just love that sunny color of the yolk.

The taste from farm-fresh eggs, of course, is much better; plus, the shells on the store-bought eggs are thinner. The farm-fresh eggs hold together better while cooking, too. Too many times, the store bought egg yolks will fall apart as soon as I put the egg in the frying pan; and if you like your eggs sunny-side up, the yolk MUST remain intact! We may or may not ever raise chickens, but at least we can find our way to the farms!
