Since we live on a 1/4 acre, we got ourselves 3 (just for management sake). No rooster needed, our dog and their coop keep them well protected. The coop we use is a design my father-in-law designed. It allows for side flaps to be raised and lowered to allow airflow and has a 60 watt bulb fixture to keep the warm, as needed. We then added a 4’x4′ “open” section (enclosed with chicken wire) so that they could wander outside and peck the bugs and grass.

They’ve produced around 2-3 eggs per day in the summer and while one is molting now, giving us 1 – 2 eggs per day.
