When I was a kid I had a hen with chicks in a small coop. Late in the night I heard a tiny chick peeping out in the wet grass. I picked him up and discovered that a racoon had torn into the coop and taken the hen and all the other chicks. I took the mixed breed orphaned chick into the house, dried him off and warmed him up. I raised him in a box on the back porch and named him Alex. Every night I covered him with an old towel over his box. When he was fully grown he still came back to his box at night and even covered himself with his towel. Alex would often pick a fight with another rooster, then come running to one of our family members for protection. When we picked him up he would crow at the other rooster as if to say, yeanh, yeanh, yeanh, yeanh. He was so funny and lived nearly 9 years.
More recently, I had a Buff Cochin rooster named Fred. He was very docile and friendly. Fred was a huge bird weighing at least 13 lbs. One time I had a mate for him and when the hen set she hatched out 8 chicks. Fred was the best of daddy you ever saw. He would actually scratch for the chicks and help hover them at night. There will never be another Fred. I lost old Fred last winter at the ripe old age of 13.
