Who am I? Who is God?

God made Earth

Before I can answer the question who am I, I have to answer the question, Who is God?

I had a visit from God one morning early as I lay in bed and His spirit spoke to me. He came to me in the stillness and quite of the night to allow me to understand who He is and who I am. His spirit spoke to me and ask me. Do you know who you are? After a miserable attempt to explain who I thought I was, God’s spirit said, let me tell you who I am so you can understand who you really are.

This is strictly a personal opinion and may or may not conform to what you view. So read and let me know how you feel. This is a personal thing for me!

Who is God?

God is many things to many people an I am just going to list a few that come to my mind.

God is our creator:

Genesis 1:
26: And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.
27: So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.
28: And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.

God is a Covenant maker!

I want to state the fact that we serve a honorable God who never backs out of a promise!
When God revealed himself to Abraham.

Genesis 15: 1-21 God establishes his covenant with Abraham. (Important to read and understand this covenant) God basically made a covenant with himself!

After the covenant was made God kept it. We have an honorable God!

God loved Abraham and the scripture said Abraham’s faith was counted unto him as righteousness! Abraham knew the answer to the question, Who is God?

James 2:23
23 And the scripture was fulfilled which saith, Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness: and he was called the Friend of God.

For thousands of years the Children of Israel had to bring their yearly sacrifices to the Great High Priest of the Tribe to sacrifice to God and make intercession for their sins to be covered! This was an atonement for the sins they had committed against God.

In the Book of Exodus Chapter 40 we find that God has instructed Moses to anoint his brother Aaron and his sons to be the high priest.

Exodus 40:15
And thou shalt anoint them, as thou didst anoint their father (Aaron), that they may minister unto me in the priest’s office: for their anointing shall surely be an everlasting priesthood throughout their generations.

For you to really get a picture of what the priesthood was all about read the first 13 chapters or so of Book of Leviticus. Yes, it takes this many chapters to explain the order of the sacrifices to be made for the atonement of sin. Many different sacrifices were made for many different sins!

This was an on going thing for thousands of years.

God finally said, you just don’t get it! You just don’t understand who I am! I am going to come to you and show you who I am! I am going to come to you in the flesh and walk among you and teach you who I am! I am going to fulfill my promise to Abraham!

A King is Born! God is about to reveal to man who he is in the flesh!

Micah 5:2
But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting.

Matthew 2:
1: Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem,
2: Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him.
3: When Herod the king had heard these things, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him.
4: And when he had gathered all the chief priests and scribes of the people together, he demanded of them where Christ should be born.
5: And they said unto him, In Bethlehem of Judaea: for thus it is written by the prophet,
6: And thou Bethlehem, in the land of Juda, art not the least among the princes of Juda: for out of thee shall come a Governor, that shall rule my people Israel.

There are so many works of Jesus listed in the Bible,

He healed the sick Matthew 14:13-15

He gave sight to the Blind, Mark 10:50-52

He made the lame walk again and cleansed the leapers, Luke 7:22.

As he walked among men he began to teach us who he is!

John 14:6
Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

Mark 6:
34 And Jesus, when he came out, saw much people, and was moved with compassion toward them, because they were as sheep not having a shepherd: and he began to teach them many things.

John 18:
20: Jesus answered him, I spake openly to the world; I ever taught in the synagogue, and in the temple, whither the Jews always resort; and in secret have I said nothing.

You see, Jesus taught in the Temple daily and told the leaders and people who he was! As was prophesied, they rejected him!

Matthew 21:41-43
41 They say unto him, He will miserably destroy those wicked men, and will let out his vineyard unto other husbandmen, which shall render him the fruits in their seasons.
42 Jesus saith unto them, Did ye never read in the scriptures, The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner: this is the Lord’s doing, and it is marvelous in our eyes?
43 Therefore say I unto you, The kingdom of God shall be taken from you, and given to a nation bringing forth the fruits thereof.

There is a new covenant made between God and Man, God reveals himself!

Hebrews 12
22: But ye are come unto mount Sion, and unto the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to an innumerable company of angels,
23: To the general assembly and church of the firstborn, which are written in heaven, and to God the Judge of all, and to the spirits of just men made perfect,
24: And to Jesus the mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling, that speaketh better things than that of Abel.
25: See that ye refuse not him that speaketh. For if they escaped not who refused him that spake on earth, much more shall not we escape, if we turn away from him that speaketh from heaven:

God is a Covenant Keeper!

God established a new covenant with man through his Son Jesus Christ! When Jesus hung on the cross and died for our sins a new covenant was established and we no longer have to make a sacrifice for sins because Jesus has made the one and only sacrifice needed!

Our sins are no longer covered as in the old Testament but they are now forgiven and never more to be remembered! You see, Jesus became sin for us and he bore the agony of our sins and shame on the cross. This was all done for the forgiveness of sins and the healing of our bodies.

Matthew 27
50: Jesus, when he had cried again with a loud voice, yielded up the ghost.
51: And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent;
52: And the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints which slept arose,
53: And came out of the graves after his resurrection, and went into the holy city, and appeared unto many.
54: Now when the centurion, and they that were with him, watching Jesus, saw the earthquake, and those things that were done, they feared greatly, saying, Truly this was the Son of God.

I really want us to concentrate on verse 51! Remember how the people had to bring sacrifices to the High Priest and the Priest would take the sacrifices and slaughter them and make a blood sacrifice and burn them upon the altar to atone for the sins of the people?

Remember how the people could not enter into the temple holy place to pray! Only the Priest were allowed into the temple holy place! The temple holy place was located behind the veil and only the priest could pass through! When Jesus died the Veil of the temple was torn apart from top to bottom and opened up the holy place to you and I! We no longer had to go through man to be forgiven by God! We now have access to the throne of God by the Blood of Jesus and we now can pray to God ourselves!

Who is God?

So, who is God?! He loved us more than he loved his own self! He made us in his image and in his likeness and all he has ever ask of us is to love him! God does not “need” us! God owns the heavens, the earth and all that is therein! God does not “need” us, God desires us! He loves us and only ask us to love him back! Who is God? He is our Father who loves us more than we can ever fully understand! Therefore we cry Abba Father!

Matthew 22:35-41
35: Then one of them, which was a lawyer, asked him a question, tempting him, and saying,
36: Master, which is the great commandment in the law?
37: Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.
38: This is the first and great commandment.
39: And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
40: On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.

When we can understand these two commandments we can understand who God truly is! We need to understand God’s love in its fullness!

John 14:21
He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.

If we want to truly understand who God is, we need to keep his commandments! Matthew 22::35-41, all the laws and prophets hang on these! Two simple commandments! “LOVE” God just wants our love!

Who am I?

Hebrews 6:18
That by two immutable things, in which it was impossible for God to lie, we might have a strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us:

The hope set before us is eternal life through Jesus Christ!

Galatians 3:7-9
7 Know ye therefore that they which are of faith, the same are the children of Abraham.
8 And the scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the heathen through faith, preached before the gospel unto Abraham, saying, In thee shall all nations be blessed.
9 So then they which be of faith are blessed with faithful Abraham.

Now, when God created the Heavens and the Earth he looked upon his creation with great pleasure. We are looking to define ourselves and try to figure out who we are! God created man in His image and in His likeness. God breathed the breath of life into man and he became a living soul! God loved him instantly and created a help meet for him in a woman who was created after the likeness of man.

God created woman from the rib of the man so she would be a part of him! Right off the start God begins to help man and try to make him happy by having someone else compatible to accompany him on his journey of life!

Now, we all know the story of the fall of man! Man failed God from the very beginning!

Therefore the creating of the sacrifices to atone for his sins against God! From the very beginning man has been disobedient and sinful!

Lets move to the psalmist David! David recognized the failure of man because of his many failures! David understood the answer to the questions of, Who am I and Who is God?

Psalm 8:3-5
3 When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained;
4 What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him?
5 For thou hast made him a little lower than the angels, and hast crowned him with glory and honor.

When I consider the heavens the work of Gods hands I just stand in awe! God hung the stars in the sky, the moon, the sun and set the earth on it’s axis so it would turn in the correct time to create all the seasons, etc. When I consider this, I myself ask, who am I that you would even consider me or retain me in your knowledge?

Hebrews 8:
10: For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, saith the Lord; I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to me a people:
11: And they shall not teach every man his neighbor, and every man his brother, saying, Know the Lord: for all shall know me, from the least to the greatest.
12: For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their iniquities will I remember no more.
13: In that he saith, A new covenant, he hath made the first old. Now that which decayeth and waxeth old is ready to vanish away.

The new covenant is being ushered in! It is a spiritual covenant! A covenant promised by God to Abraham!

Romans 8
14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.
15 For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.

(Abba: The word Abba is an Aramaic word that would most closely be translated as “Daddy.” It was a common term that young children would use to address their fathers. It signifies the close, intimate relationship of a father to his child, as well as the childlike trust that a young child puts in his “daddy.”)

16 The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:
17 And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.

This set of scriptures causes me to just melt with humility! Can you even begin to understand the scope of this? We are heirs of God!! We have become the children of the most high God, the King of Kings and Lord of all Lords! Take a minute to digest this! We have become heirs of God!

God owns everything! We have become joint heirs with Christ! Christ has been given all! If we can just get a glimmer of this! Those of us who have been saved by grace are one with Jesus Christ! His Holy Spirit makes us complete! Think about this set of verses above and concentrate on them! We will be glorified with Christ when our salvation is complete!

John 1:
12 But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, them gave the right to become children of God.
13 who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.

Romans 8:22-24
And not only they, but ourselves also, which have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption, to wit, the redemption of our body.

Galatians 4:4-6
To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons.

Ephesians 1:5
Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will,

Matthew 16:
15 He saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am?
16 And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.
17 And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven.
18 And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.
19 And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.

We are the sons and daughters of the most high God! Heirs to the kingdom of God! Partakers of his glory!

I will finish by telling a true story, saying this! We are servants and sojourners here in this land! We are to be servants of God and our fellow man! Remember the scripture in Matthew 22:35-41 about the greatest commandment?

Here is a story to help you understand who we are and how we should be! I read this in a book called “Down but not out” by Barry Minkow. If you get the chance to read this book it will be a great inspiration to you if you have ever fallen flat on your face like I have. I will be sharing more of this book with you in the coming days. It is the story of his failure and finding salvation.

Barry had a revelation as to why he did what he did (you will need to read the book to know what he did) He became so emotional that he had to speak to someone about this problem. He chose an older fellow pastor who was African American and 71 years old at the time.

The fellow pastor explained to Barry why God loves us and why we should love each other in a simple but yet moving story that took place in his own life.

The fellow pastor had a son who had taken sick and was not able to keep any food down for several days and he and his wife called their family physician and explained the symptoms and problem. Their doctor wrote prescription and since it was on a friday afternoon told them if the child was not better by Monday morning to bring him into his office.

The medicine stopped the vomiting but then he developed a very serious diarrhea thorough out the entire weekend. Monday morning found them at the Doctors office. The child was very sick. The doctor examined him and determined he was severely dehydrated. The doctor advise the pastor to take his son to the Childrens Hospital in the same to be admitted.

The pastor ask should they have an ambulance take him so he could be watched by medical personnel while in transit. The Doctor assured them in front of his nurse that it was ok for them to take him and an ambulance was not necessary! They left immediately and proceeded to the childrens hospital. Upon arrival they had to fill out paperwork and go through all the red tape involved in admittance, ins, etc. The child died while they were doing this!

After the autopsy it was determined that the child died of severe dehydration. It became apperant that had the family doctor called an ambulance to transfer the child he would have been given an iv immediately and probably would not have died.

Now the pastors wife continually blamed herself for the childs death despite ll the comforting she received. The pastors youngest son had to be admitted to the hospital from trauma of losing his older brother this way! They really went through hell!

Now the phone calls start coming in! Here is where you and I would be tempted to get even for the death of our child! Malpractice lawyers, promising millions of dollars if the pastor would sue the doctor. You see, the doctor was at fault and had told them in front of his nurse that the child would be ok and would not need an ambulance. Therefore was negligent in his capacity as doctor! they also wanted to sue the hospital for dragging their feet during admitting him!
Did he sue them?

Nope, he went back to his family doctor who could not even look him in the eye and was apologizing profusely. The old pastor paused and said, I forgive you! I came here to forgive you!

You see, money would not bring his son back, nor would it take away the hurt of such a loss. The old pastor said he forgave his family doctor because of something his mother had taught him while growing up!

She taught him that people are not valuable because of what they can do for you but for who they are — Created in the image of God!

I hope I have helped you come to better terms of “Who is God” and “Who am I”.

Thank you for taking the time to read this article and God bless you!
