Homemade Laundry Detergent can save lots of money. It is as good and better than most detergents out there! One of the processes in making your own or DIY Homemade Laundry Detergent is the part of grating your soap! The soap grating is the most difficult part but we have found a way around this. I read on a blog and on Facebook where people were microwaving the soap! Some brands worked and some didn’t! We used Fels-Naptha! Ours worked fine.
I have tried grating soap and I will tell you it is not fun!
Ingredients for: Homemade Laundry Detergent
Use 1 bar of Fels Naptha soap (You can use Dove if you want to) Cut in 5 equal parts!
1 Cup of 20 Team Borax
1 Cup of Arm ~ N ~ Hammer Super Washing Soda.
I finally found how to grate the soap for this Homemade Laundry Detergent and it not take forever! You can cut your bar of soap into 5 equal pieces and put it in your microwave and set it on about 1.5 minutes. Watch it and you may have to take it out before the one and a half minutes are up. It will expand and look like a loaf of soap bread.
Directions for: Homemade Laundry Detergent
Grate the Soap into very fine pieces and mix with a cup each of the Borax and Arm ~ N ~ Hammer and use 1 Tbsp per load.
If you have an extra heavy load of more than usual dirty clothes you can use 2 tbsp.
Being Careful not to get burned, not that this happened to me! I will never tell! (I put wax paper under mine) You can use a micro-safe dish if you choose, remove the soap and let it cool off. Give it 20 minutes or so to cool. Wait on it to cool well. Patience is truly a virtue here! It grates or crumbles in your hands easily now. Turns out just like the powdered detergent. Now, the microwave smells like soap! No Problem, just put a cup 1/2 full of vinegar in for about 2 minutes, odor gone!

Another great tip: I have read you can use a rolled up ball of Aluminum Foil for static cling in the dryer! I have not tried it yet but am going to! Have you tried it?
