Rent a Chicken! Who ever heard of such a thing? Apparently folk in Pennsylvania have. Most folk who move to the big city from the country already have some knowledge of the country life and many times that includes knowledge of chickens. Chickens have been around for a long time and I have have been associated with them since childhood. This is all new to me as I had never heard of how to, Rent a Chicken!
We have fed neighbors chickens, fed our own chickens, gathered eggs, killed them for the wonderful meat they offer, but Renting a Chicken?

In Pennsylvania, there is a couple who has come upon this idea of renting out chickens to first time owners so they can see if this is something they would enjoy before being stuck with a flock of chickens they don’t want or enjoy then having to find a way to get rid of them.
I wrote an article sometime back about how some first time chicken owners got discouraged and was dropping these wonderful pets off at the local Animal Shelters. This is another way you might find some good chickens cheap! I would venture to say most shelters are not equipped for them and would be glad to put them in your home.
Rent a Chicken, this is really something worth clucking about! A chicken rental! Maybe something you would be interested in? If you raise chickens you could offer this to a local area. Supply the mobile coop, and two hens and enough food for the duration of the rental! A quick how to guide to set up the coop and instructions on how to manage your chickens and feed.
Many people are curious about this new thing of raising chickens for your own fresh eggs and sometimes for fresh meat also. Of course this all depends on how much space you have. Even a small backyard will support a couple of hens but if you need to go larger you will certainly need more space. A lot of folk just don’t know where or how to start! You could be that avenue and make a little side income to go with if you chose to Rent a chicken and the accessories that go with them.
Charge a set fee for two hens and a portable coop with enough food for a month and if the folk want to keep the chickens and coop good! If not they return it all to you and of course it is a non refundable deposit! You will make you some side income either way and help educate others about how to raise chickens!
Chickens are very social animals and they love being around people. They have language all their own. We can learn a little bit from them if we try. 🙂
The average rental is for 6 months but you could always adjust it to suite your needs. The upfront fee is normally $350.00 for the portable coop, two hens and enough feed for that time. If at the end of the term they decide to keep them they will purchase them from you at a pre-arranged price.
