First time Chicken Owners dumping Chickens at Shelters
The following article deals with Chickens being left at animal shelters. It seems that several first time Hipster Chicken Raisers are not prepared for the country life and raising chickens for fresh eggs.
Many first time Chicken raisers are unaware that many Chickens quit laying eggs after a couple of years. Chickens are for laying eggs and table meat to many farmers and Breeders alike. They realize that when a Chicken quits laying eggs it becomes a liability to them. At this point many farmers make dinner out of them. That is just the way it is.
In the City and Urban environment, they are for eggs but they also become pets to the owners and some of these birds live more than 10 years. So, if you don’t think you want to keep these lovely ladies as pets and friends for years then please make arrangements for them other than dropping them off at shelters. They really deserve better than this.
City and Towns are complaining about this issue and saying Chickens are creating a nuisance with rodents, poop, stink and uncleanliness. It the City councils got worked up as much about spaying and neutering the cats and dogs they would be much more useful to the community.
