So you are interested in raising chickens but live in the city limits! Oh no, can chickens be raised in the city? Yes they can! First check with your local Agriculture Agent. They will know or they can put you in touch with the people who do know!
There are many, many City’s and towns through out America where you can be raising chickens as long as you follow the City / Town codes. Always check before hand and save yourself fines and the cost of redoing or moving your flock. Some Towns / Cities don’t allow Roosters! Your neighbors would not appreciate your big Rooster waking him or her up at 6:00am on Sunday morning! Trust me, you need to check the laws and regulations of your Town / City first!
The Coop below is a FIVE STAR COOP and the construction makes it easier to heat in the winter and cool in the summer. It’s hollow walls prevent sweating.
My wife’s mother is raising chickens and we benefit from fresh eggs regularly. They are so much better tasting than the store bought ones! Here in the country where we live there isn’t any codes or regulations that I know of. We live in an area that we could just let our chickens roam and peck their little hearts out if it weren’t for predators! Yes, predators! Coyotes, Fox, Skunk, Mink, on and on! Depending on where you live you will need to take into account that your chicken flock will need protection that only you can give! “Predators”, is an article dealing with this.
I remember when I was a small child my parents and grand parents were always raising chickens. We benefited from the eggs and fried chicken both! Most people just raise them now days for the fresh eggs but we enjoyed the eggs and fresh meat! We had a big old out building that we kept them up in at night and then let them roam throughout the day. One of our neighbors raised them in large quantities and had a huge chicken house with a large yard fenced in around the house for the chickens to roam in. I can still remember going with them and gathering eggs! It was and experience a small child will carry with him the rest of his life! I really miss those days!
Back to the coop or houses! there are Coops and houses you can build to be permanent and you can make Mobile Coops that are light weight and can be moved around the yard as the chickens peck and feed on the grass. Do a little research and see if you could enjoy the pleasures of raising your own chickens! Btw, Chicken droppings make great fertilizer! 🙂
Mix Breed Chickens
Pros: Beautiful, Some are very good Layers, All Unique
Cons: Can’t Be Shown in Poultry Shows
Mixed Breed chickens, otherwise known as Barnyard Mutts, Mutts, or Crossbreeds, are perhaps the most useful of chickens, depending on what breeds contributed to them.
Mixed Breeds that are a cross between, say, a Leghorn and a Gold Sexlink, would most likely produce offspring that would be good layers, if hens, and possibly could be sexed at hatch time. Mixed Breeds are not recognized, and therefore cannot be shown in poultry shows. Many people are raising Laying Hens in the City.
But they are a nice variation to add to any backyard or barnyard.
