Urban Homesteaders 1

The Urban Homesteaders has become almost as popular as the Urban chicken craze. Back in the late 90’s the Urban / City Chicken boom took place and the Urban Homesteading soon followed. As economic times get harder and harder people are becoming more and more self sufficient. In this self sufficiency they are not only raising chickens but gardens in the Urban Communities as well.

Homesteaders just aren’t what they used to be!

Many people raise gardens for many purposes. There are Urban gardeners who raise gardens just to have a few vegetables throughout the summer months and there are those who like many people enjoy the memories of living on the farm or in the country and growing a garden as children and this brings them many fond memories plus vegetables.

From time to time we read of those who have been diagnosed with a sickness and they are trying to become more healthy eaters. This is an area that can and will assist people who need to watch their food source. Gardens can be planted pretty much anywhere. Many Urban Homesteaders plant and grow their gardens in their back yards even where space is limited. I read an article on others who were raising their gardens in their front yards using raised vegetable beds.

This is becoming a very popular thing in the Urban setting. Many flower beds are getting an upgrade to vegetable beds. It is much easier to raise gardens than chickens as there are usually nor ordinance against raising gardens! I know there will be some neighbors who will frown on a raised bed vegetable garden being next door but there really isn’t anything they can do to prevent it. Your property, your garden. The fresh vegetables make it all worth while. Fresh vegetables to eat during growing season and then vegetables for canning and freezing for winter enjoyment.

Urban Homesteaders are not the typical Homesteader you get a picture of when you think Homesteaders. We would think of a family of several children and a mother and father batching it out on the land. Sewing, canning, making wool, making soap, etc. These new Urban Homesteaders don’t necessarily do all these things. Many of them do one thing or the other. Some raise chickens, Some raise gardens, some raise goats, some raise cattle, some raise hogs and some raise a mix of, or most of those animals mentioned. Depending on the acreage of the Urban setting there will be restrictions on what and how much of a farm animal you can raise. It is always best to check with your local officials before purchasing these animals to take up Urban Homesteading.

Many Urban Homesteaders are very conscious minded about the environment and take every precaution to preserve it. Many have bee hives and collect their own honey others raise chickens and gather their own eggs while others raise cattle and have their own milk and fresh beef to eat. One of the great benefits of raising your own produce or meat is you know what it has been fed and how it has been raised. This goes a long way for these Urban Homesteaders.

Some of these Homesteaders also still mend old quilts and baskets by hand. Many make their own soaps, detergents, cleaners, etc. Not only does it help the environment by eliminating a lot of plastic bottles being discarded but it is much more cost efficient! We have made our own laundry detergent, window cleaners, dishwashing detergents, bathroom cleaners for some time now and it is very cost efficient for us! these not only save money but work as well and some even better than the store bought brands.

Many Urban Homesteaders feel that everything has value from the vegetables, chickens, bees, to homemade clothing and it is a very strong motivator for many of them to teach their children these traits. Who knows maybe some day the city will turn back into the country it was before it became a city! 🙂 If you see your neighbor building big rectangular or square boxes in their front yard it might be more fun to join them than to fight them. Fresh is always the best!
