Triple Chocolate Cake

In this Triple Chocolate Cake we will find so much chocolate that even the most devoted fan is going to be delighted.

When I think chocolate, I think, yummy! There are just few things in the food chain that I like better than chocolate. I read somewhere that chocolate comes from a bean that is grown on a tree!

Now, I am no expert on these kinds of things, so, does this make chocolate a vegetable or fruit of some kind? If so, it has to be good for you! 😉

  Ingredients for: Triple Chocolate Cake

First we need to make a Devils Food Chocolate Layer Cake! I know, this is the start of something very good! All of us chocolate lovers are now beginning to lick our lips in anticipation! Ok, time to get the mixer, Good Grips 3-Piece Mixing Bowl Set, cake pans and ingredients together.

Now, one of my favorite parts of the cake, the frosting. Many times we use frosting from the tube we get at the grocery but for this Triple Chocolate Cake we are going to make our own. This is going to be luscious chocolate on chocolate on chocolate! This is such a good and easy frosting to make. I am sure you will use it many times again for other great chocolate cakes you bake! Time to get that Hand Mixer ready!

Milk Chocolate Frosting for: Triple Chocolate Cake

  3. In a large bowl, using a handheld or stand mixer set on high speed, mix the buttermilk, oil, room temperature eggs, and vanilla until combined.
  4. With the mixer on low, Slowly add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients .
  5. Add the coffee.
  6. The batter is going to be VERY thin. This is how it is supposed to be.
  7. Pour the batter into the ready cake pans and bake for 23-27 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  8. This should take around 22 – 25 minutes depending on your oven.
  9. Allow to cool well before frosting.

While you are awaiting this wonderful cake to bake, get your stuff together for the frosting and throw it together. You can let it sit, it will not hurt anything. If you want you can refrigerate it but it will need to get back to room temperature before frosting the cake with it.

Frosting for: Triple Chocolate Cake

  1. With a hand mixer, cream the butter on medium speed for 3-4 minutes.
  2. This creates a good creamy base for the frosting.
  3. Add 3 cups of powdered sugar and 3/4 cup of cocoa powder.
  4. Mix on low.
  5. Add 3 Tablespoons of heavy cream and 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract.
  6. Now, if you get the icing too thin you can add more powdered sugar until the desired consistency is reached.
  7. If the frosting is too thick, add a couple of Tablespoons of heavy cream.
  8. Add 1/2 teaspoon of salt.

Taste your frosting and add a pinch more salt if the frosting is too sweet for you.

You can add more cocoa powder if the frosting is not chocolatey enough.

Triple Chocolate Cake

Now that this delicious cake is out of the oven and cooled we can put it together. Trust me, this is not going to last long if you have a bunch of chocolate lovers around your place! The good thing is, even if it is just you or you only have one other person with you, it keeps well in the refrigerator for the next several days! Yay, you can have your cake and eat it all week!

Assembly for: Triple Chocolate Cake

  1. Place 1 layer of the cake on a plate or Decorative Cake Stand, flat side up.
  2. Using a knife or offset spatula, spread the top with frosting.
  3. Put the second layer on top, rounded side up, and spread the frosting evenly on the top and sides of the cake.
  4. If you are using chocolate chips you can add them to the cake to decorate with.
  5. This cake has a good shelf life when covered and will keep well in the refrigerator.

Triple Chocolate Cake

* This recipe requires Buttermilk . I make my own buttermilk at home by using 1 Tablespoon of lemon juice or white vinegar in a measuring glass. Fill the remainder of the cup up with milk measuring 1 cup. You can use 1%, 2%, or whole milk. Stir good and let sit for 5 minutes.

The homemade buttermilk will be somewhat curdled and ready to use in your recipe.

*This cake will not set up properly if you use cold eggs. Please see note for a shortcut to bring eggs to room temperature.

* Note: Fill a bowl with warm water, not too hot! If it is too hot it will make the eggs begin to cook. Place the eggs in it for a couple of minutes. You may have to refill the bowl a couple of times to get the desired temperature you need.
