Flying Duck Orchids from Australia

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Duck Orchid

These Flying Duck Orchids can be found from Queensland to South Australia, to even Tasmania. This beautiful duck shaped plant is found in eucalyptus woodland in coastal or swampy shrub land and heart land. It is mostly found near the coast, but occasionally at higher altitudes. Because it is so small, it can be difficult to locate in the wild.

The Flying Duck Orchids is a terrestrial plant and features a remarkable flower, resembling a duck in flight. The flower is an attractant to insects, such as male sawflies which pollinate the flower in a process known as pseudocopulation. In 1986 the Flying Duck Orchids was featured on an Australian postage stamp.

These are very beautiful and a pleasure to look at. They make such pretty pictures. Framed they would make great wall accessories for any room in the house.

Thanks for stopping by Back Roads Living again. We hope you enjoyed these beautiful Flying Duck Orchids as much as we did.
