Homemade Banana Pudding Recipe

Here at Back Roads Living we love Homemade Banana Pudding! It just seems like things that are homemade have a little more taste and flavor. Maybe its’ the care and love that is put into making it? I don’t know, but we sure like our Banana Puddings!




We have been eating and making our mothers Homemade Banana Pudding Recipe for years.  It seems like every year I see a new recipe with a new twist for banana pudding but they just never seem to measure up to our mothers!  Maybe it is what you get used to or maybe it is actually the recipe?  No matter, there are dozens of recipes that many people swear by.  We are no different, we think this is one of, if not the best homemade banana pudding recipe around!

There are certain things you will need to make this pudding!  Every good baker and cook will need a good selection of kitchen utensils and small appliances.

Ingredients for: Homemade Banana Pudding Recipe

  • 1 (12 ounce) can of evaporated milk the evaporated milk makes it a richer pudding (You can use regular milk if you choose to. It is good also!)
  • 1/2 Tsp salt
  • 3 Egg yolks
  • 1/4 Cup cornstarch
  • 1/2 Cup sugar
  • 2 Tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 Tbsp butter or margarine
  • 1 Box Nilla Wafers
  • 2 – 3 Banana’s (Depends on how much you like em)

Directions for: Homemade Banana Pudding Recipe

  1. In a pot on top of the stove mix the milk, salt, egg yolks, cornstarch, sugar and vanilla with a wire whisk.
  2. Cut the butter into small pieces and add to the pot slowly.
  3. Cook on medium high heat until this comes to a boil and thickens while stirring constantly with whisk.
  4. This will burn easily if you don’t keep it stirred.
  5. Cook for approx 4 or 5 minutes, at this point it starts bubbling and gets thick.
  6. Turn off the burner and remove from heat.
  7. We layer Pudding, Cookies and then Banana’s.

Topping for: Homemade Banana Pudding Recipe

  • 3 Egg whites
  • 4 Tbsp sugar
  • Mix at medium-high speed until peaks form.
  • Set in bottom of oven (Broiler) until browned..(Watch closely it will scorch fast if you don’t)
